2024 – The Leadership We Could Have In Florida
This is not fantasy, but almost. Instead of a happy ending, keep reading to learn about what we are getting.
2024 the legislative session started in January and organizations like the Florida Cannabis Action Network were very excited about what could be. We worked carefully with allies from the Suncoast Chapter of the National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws to make sure that we were casting a wide net, not duplicating efforts. We spoke to our members to make sure that we were doing the things that were most necessary for them. With the right leadership, Florida could be a much friendlier place for patients.
Florida Cannabis Action Network has followed the legislative action full-time since 2011. With generous donations from our members and sponsorship of dollars from our annual lobby event, we take up residence in Tallahassee to ensure the cannabis community knows what’s happening.
We were so very excited to find sponsors for some fabulous bills. We believe that the way to ensure that people are safe is to make sure that packaging is accurate. We worked with our member Chrissy Barrington to improve packaging for patients using edibles. With the right leadership, we could be keeping people safer.
We have watched as organizations have pooled resources to raise money for veterans’ access to medical marijuana, paying for cards, gifting doctors services, and giving discounts on medicine. Many veterans were promised 100% coverage from the VA to come out of pocket to purchase medical marijuana products. Working with Jimmy Johnston and Branden Limprich, leaders in the veteran community, we were able to introduce a bill to give veterans free medical marijuana cards. With the right leadership, we could be honoring our commitment to veterans.
Our friends from Suncoast NORML had sponsors for a really important piece of legislation aimed at keeping families together. Their bill protected medical marijuana patients from having their health status used against them in child custody. In other words, no one can use the Court to take your kids away from you just because you’re a medical marijuana patient! With the right leadership, we could be keeping families whole.
Our January 16th, Cannabis @ the Capital, was well attended, attendees made a great impression on lawmakers, and the Rotunda was alive with activity.
When Governor Ron DeSantis begins to sign bills after this session closes, the legacy could have been keeping families together by protecting medical marijuana patients in child custody disputes. The legacy could have been, making packaging safer, environmentally friendlier, and better for patients. The legacy could have been extending the privileges already granted veterans in Florida to include complementary medical marijuana cards.
We could be keeping families together, making packaging safer, environmentally friendlier, and better for patients, and extending the privileges already granted veterans in Florida to include complementary medical marijuana cards.
Instead, Legislative Leaders are:
CAPPING where we can buy CANNABIS products.
CAPPING Product serving sizes in the Adult Hemp Market.
CAPPING THC Potency for Adult Cannabis Market.
DEVASTATING our developing hemp market with unreasonable definitions.
